Hello! This week in class we are learning how to classify objects as living and non living. Living Objects are characterized by these 7 things:
1. Feeding
2. Movement
3. Respiration
4. Excretion
5. Growth
6. Reproduction
7. Sensitivity
For an object to be living it must meet ALL 7 characteristics. Therefore, anything that does not meet these seven characteristics is non living. Some examples are a hat, computer, glass, wood, and sand.
There is a short Living versus Non Living Quiz that you can take at this site. It is introductory to the topic, beginning with clarifying the difference between animals and non living objects.
I love this next link that I am going to give you. It has several pictures of every day objects and things that we encounter. The student gets to sort these objects on a chart classifying each as either living or non living. This Living and Non Living Chart will also allow them to self check by clicking on a button at the bottom of the chart. If they have made a mistake, it will let them know how many are incorrect and how many are correct, allowing for them to try and catch their mistakes.
The final site that I have for you is a Classifying Game. There are real pictures of objects and for each one, you are to pick whether it is living or non living. An explanation is given whether you choose the right or wrong answer.
These are great sites for you and your child to visit this week so check them out! Perhaps you can point out different examples of living and non living objects you see throughout the week.
Look again next week for a new post!
